How does H. G. Wells make the dystopia of the Time machine credible? :: English Literature
How does H. G. Wells make the dystopia of the Time machine credible? THE TIME MACHINE ================ How does H. G. Wells make the dystopia of the Time machine credible? The future is a vast ignorance - so they say. But is it really? In The Time Machine Wells points out that it is possible to travel through time by bringing up the idea of the existence of the forth dimension, which according to Wells is time. Many of us picture the future as a utopia - an ideal dream world. I for one imagined it as a utopia. Wells presents to us the `clearer picture`. Initially, it seems like a utopia. But there is a note of pessimism to show how Wells imagines the future might be, therefore, presenting it as a dystopia to the audience as well as the reader - a warning to all of us. Of course Wells doesn't keep it simple. He makes sure he captures the reader's attention by the way he uses his language. But is this necessary? Does Wells really have to do this? Firstly, if he doesn't capture the reader 's attention then they won't be able to get the message. He does this to sweeten the pill. To make it easier for us to take in otherwise it will be of no use. He makes it plausible by using sensory detail. For example when the Time Traveller is time travelling he describes it as a "nightmare sensation of falling", he goes further by saying that he felt a "dumb confusedness" which might have been because things were happening too fast. Furthermore, he described it by saying that "the twinkling succession of darkness and light was excessively painful to the eye" and also the fact that he felt "faint and hazy". "My arms ached, my back was cramped, and I was trembling with the prolonged terror of a fall". All this detailed emotive language allows us to experience what the traveller does and so makes the events more believable. By using particular similes, Wells tries to make the future familiar. Imagine if he hadn't used similes then we would not know exactly what he was talking about. For example, "night came like the turning out of a lamp. You know when you turn out a lamp it happens so quickly so we as the reader or even the Time Traveller's audience know exactly what he is talking about when he describes it in such a way. It breaks down the message into smaller pieces, therefore, making it easier to understand. As the Time Traveller travelled through time, day and night passed so

Discuss Research Into Effects of Workplace Stress Essay
A research for workplace stress was conducted by both Marmot and Johnson and Hall. Marmot researched effects for low control and whether it was linked to more stress. Johnson and Hall researched high workload to stress. Marmot conducted an investigation with participants from London ââ¬â based government civil servants, and the studies are therefore referred to as the Whitehall studies. Civil employees in London were asked to volunteer to take part in the study. High grade employees were compared to Low grade civil servants. Marmot found that workers with less control were four times likely to die of heart attack than their colleagues with more control. In addition they were more likely to suffer from other stress related illnesses such as cancers, ulcers, stomach disorders and strokes. The conclusion was obvious, that lack of control seemed to be associated with illness and they recommended that employers gave their staff more autonomy and control. The study showed to be correlational. This is because it can only be said that there appears to be an association with low control and stress-related illness. It cannot be assumed that law control is causing illness. It could be that workers with poor health are likely to achieve the higher grade jobs with more control. For all the more reasons to weaken the findings. Also the research is said to be self-reported. This is because workers filled in their own questionnaire which is inaccurate and eligible for participant reactivity. Also if the workers found out what the researchers are looking to find then the results would be biased and so they may answer the questions accordingly. For this reason the findings of the research may be inaccurate and so will not be reliable. The investigation that Johnson and Hall did was done on a large scale and they investigated with 14000 male and female Swedish workers. They used self-report questionnaires. They compared sawmill workers high job demand and low control with maintenance workers who had low job demand and high control. Sawyers in Swedish sawmill had more illnesses and higher levels of adrenaline in urine than lower risks groups. This shows that high demand and workload is associated with stress related illness. The study relies heavily on self-report techniques making them less reliable. A person perception of their workload may not be entirely accurate or unbiased. Also cause and effect is hard to establish and high demand/low control jobs may be linked to social class. Furthermore the study doesnââ¬â¢t take into account of individual differences. Lazarus, another psychologist, claims that it is the perception of work overload that is the important factor rather than the number of hours/the actual amount of work. In this sense, work overload is a perception held by a worker that they are required to work too long and/or too hard. Those who have high hardiness may see demand as a challenge rather than a threat; this therefore weakens Johnsonsââ¬â¢ overall assumption of workplace stress affecting individuals in the same way. The research on workplace stress has a good significance on its stressors as it affects productivity, motivation and time off work with health problems. Therefore occupational psychologists are brought into the workplace to reduce the workplace stress. The study also has practical applications and so many employers now take stress in the workplace very seriously. Stress is bad for business as it is seen to cause ill health, absenteeism, high staff turnover and low job performance all of which costs the company money. The research also has extraneous variables. This is because despite the link between lack of job control and stress related illness found in many studies.

Meaning of Life and Success Essay
Success is a person or thing that desired aims and achieves or attains fame or any form of accomplishment which will always make them proud or happy at the end of either the day, month or year. The word success was originated in the mid-16th century from a Latin word successus and a verb succedere meaning come close after. When I hear of the word success there are two things that come in mind, hard work and determination. Hard work is one of the main and most important building blocks in my success foundation. Working hard is one of the best and most accurate ways to think about being successful. Success cannot be earned unless you strive and work hard for it, because it is a word that comes with work and if work is not done then the meaning of the word canââ¬â¢t be accomplished. Like Einstein said ââ¬Å"If A is a success in life then A equals x plus y plus z. work is x; y is play and z is keeping your mouth shutâ⬠for instance to me as an athlete working hard and in playing hard rather than running my mouth are the best way of being successful in game point stands in my career. Determination is a very critical and important aspect when it comes to success. To be determined to achieve any goals or aims is a very important choice of being successful. Bertrand 2 Determination can to be physically, spiritually and emotionally which all combines with hard work and if you combine both hard work and determination together you will always get a good result of success. Being successful in life can be one of the precious and happiest moments in life that can last for a long time if and only if you do what is expected of you to keep the success going on. Success can be advantageous in many ways; Accomplishing a goal, moving on to a new goal, brings happiness and fulfillment, set new and personal records, inspire, motivate and give you strengths to aim high and set bigger goals. But itââ¬â¢s not always everybody thatââ¬â¢s successful that is happy or satisfied with their success. The isnââ¬â¢t that much difference being successful than being a failure, like the good old quote that say ââ¬Å"the difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength not a lack of knowledge, but rather the a lack in willâ⬠this quote is very simple and well understood and the quoteââ¬â¢s point is clearly pointed out, which state the main difference between a successful person and others which is the will to be the successful person that they are. To be successful person there should be some sought of guidelines to help you achieve or attain success. Thinking about success also brings about the thought or idea of failure ââ¬Å"In order to success your desire for success should be greater rather than your fear of failureâ⬠. An important and inspiring quote as this from one of the favorite, idol and inspiring actor in the movie industry and in the society should and is been considered by a lot of fans to be very important in achieving success rather than having the fear of failure because his path of success has given or got him to where he is at the moment.

Arnold Friend Essay
One of the big mysteries In Joyce Carol Oatesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,â⬠Is Arnold Friend the devil or not. Arnold Friend portrays the devil in many ways. In the story, Arnold friend is the devil, he went to Connieââ¬â¢s house and tries to get her to go for a ride with him and his friend Elli Oscar so, he can rape and kill her. Arnold Friend is none other than the devil himself, which shows in his appearance, his speech, his actions and supernatural psychic powers. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s appearance is the main reason people think he is the devil. His hair is not natural looking ââ¬Å"He placed his sunglasses on top of his head, carefully, as if he were indeed wearing a wigâ⬠. His hair is shabby and all over his head like he is wearing a wig to hide his devil horns. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s eyes are another thing that is devilish. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s eyes are very weird looking ââ¬Å"He took off the sunglasses and she saw how pale the skin around his eyes was, like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light. His eyes were chips of broken glass that catch the light in an amiable wayâ⬠Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s eyes look very weird as if he was some sort of demonic being. Arnold Friends other devilish characteristics include his nose and neck. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s nose does not seem to be natural ââ¬Å"The nose long and hawked-like, sniffing as if she were a treatâ⬠. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s nose is not human like which means it must be the nose of the devil himself. Arnold friendââ¬â¢s neck is so different form a human neck ââ¬Å"Even his neck looked muscularâ⬠. Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s neck seems to be the neck of a muscular animal which is a devilish characteristic which makes Arnold Friend the devil. In conclusion Arnold Fiend represented the devil because he was nothing, but trouble. His first words to Connie were ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Gonna get you, baby.â⬠That can also represent Connieââ¬â¢s sexual desires because she continued to converse with him and seemed interested for the most part. He was there purely for sex and Connie was hesitating, but couldnââ¬â¢t resist his manipulation. You could also tell he was demonic because he knew a lot about her and walked in a really creepy way. He was evi l because he threatened to hurt Connieââ¬â¢s family which caused her to get inside the car. Arnold Friend also knew things about Connie that only she couldà have known. He knows a lot of information about Connie, and he tells Connie what her family is doing at that same moment like some sort of psychic demon.

Linguistics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Linguistics - Essay Example Hence, the ââ¬Å"writtenâ⬠language enjoys the superiority of being official and acceptable everywhere. The difference between jargon, accents, slang and dialect is also important. Dialects keep changing since language is made and modified by the times people live in, which of course are incessantly in a flux. Some legitimacy is also enjoyed by different dialects depending on who speaks it, mainly subscribing to the various strata of society. Usually the choices of the elite determine the stratification of dialects and languages; via which many other stratification can also be explained for example fashion etc. 2. Non-standard dialects and its usage is quite political if you come to think of it. The chapters elaborates about how standard versus non-standard is largely a matter of what is in vogue at that particular point in history. For example, the r-lessness that suffers changing connotations on either side of the Atlantic is simply a matter of fashion. At the same time it is not so simple because it has serious implications for the members who speak in it as the way of talking is a very important judgment factor, voluntarily and involuntarily. This kind of stratification of language relegates communities to the periphery by defining ââ¬Ëpopularââ¬â¢ dialect etc. ... The politicians and well-educated might also talk in the same vernacular dialect to portray a sense of belonging to their local community. 3. Linguistic variability is important because it represents the variety of cultures and styles. They are of many levels and types. The various levels are lexical (vocabulary and meaning), phonological (pronunciation), morphosyntactic (syntax and usage of words), and pragmatic (way of talking, pausing, and pacing). The various types are those of social class and social networks, gender, and ethnicity. Social status has varied influences on language, with no easy one on one relation. In some places, (Arabic speaking nations), the level education defines status and not the profession (unlike America, where occupation is the general parameter). Also, the high or correct Classical Arabic is not spoken in daily use. In America, and other western countries however, standard language is preferred over nonstandard by people who are of upper class, so to s ay. Loose social ties (usually in lower class groups) tend to be more open to language change as compared to people belonging to dense social ties who maintain vernacular speech features and are less likely to language change (Milroy and Milroy). Like Labov suggested, that the lower class are also more open to language change because they are the ones who are most upwardly mobile of all class groups. 4. Language variation and gender researches show markedly concrete inferences. In case of stable language features, women tend to use standard language more than men. For example, swimming instead of swimminââ¬â¢. Interestingly, women are more subject to language change than men in many western countries. In another example, Labov observed

Seeing the value in art Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Seeing the value in art - Research Paper Example The great works of art purchase is not as is with normal public goods. Why then canââ¬â¢t art be able do fed and shelter us just like technology? What value have people therefore assigned art? According to Guest, (1), we concider art as feelings: the objective expwrience the the piece of art work instills in us. as such the quality of the artwork could be judged by how much feelings it evokes in us. As I investigate the value of art and why art needs to be assigned value just like technology so that it can feed and shelter us, this paper will establish the monetary, cultural and historical valuation of art. Additionally, it will discuss the reception of art work and art movements, as well art exhibitions that challenged tradition and subsequently broadened the definition of art present in contemporary visual artworks. Finally, the paper will outline the objectives and roles of public agencies involved in supporting the creation and installation of art before giving a brief summary conclusion on the findings. Assessing the value of an artwork involve a critical analysis of the term value. In economics, value refers to a commodityââ¬â¢s worth as measured against others. In ethics, it implies to those desirable and worthwhile qualities of a commodity. It may also include rating something in relation to its perceived worth, usefulness or importance. Sometimes value can also be understood in paintings and photography as the darkness or lightness of the given image. Monetary value refers to that property of having material worth. This is often indicated by how much money the property would bring if sold out. Monetary value of art has been an issue especially when it comes to how much is a given of art work decided. Smith (1) identifies that it is hard to seee art through the clutter of dollars. He asserts that the monetary value of art has been asigned by the new culture that differentiates

Summary on readings Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Summary on readings - Essay Example Kidnap Poem This intriguing poem by Nikki Giovanni offers a unique and chilling perspective of being kidnapped if the kidnapper were a poet. The kidnap victim would become the subject of a poem as they are placed ââ¬Å"in my phrases and meter.â⬠Giovanniââ¬â¢s idea of kidnapping someone for the sake of a poem sounds more like a romance in the making than a legitimate kidnapping. The victim would be taken to either to Jones Beach, Coney Island, or to Giovanniââ¬â¢s house. Kidnap victims are seldom treated to such beautiful, romantic places. Then the doting poet would shower their victim with lilacs, run with them through the rain, and roll around with them on the beach ââ¬â all the makings of a love story. Indeed, Giovanni believes that their victim on the beach would complement the poetââ¬â¢s vision. Giovanni would play the lyre for their victim in an attempt to win them over, and even show them off to her mother. In Giovanniââ¬â¢s eyes, to make a poem out of a kidnapping, show would have to show her victim love. My Dungeon Shook/Dear James James Baldwin begins his letter to his nephew by telling stating that it took him five tries to perfect his letter. This suggests either unsureness in his words, a reluctance in writing to his nephew, or just the inability to properly relay what he feels. James then compares his nephew to his father, or Jamesââ¬â¢ bother. His nephew reminds him of the tough and vulnerable nature that his father exhibited. He also attempts to compare his nephew to his grandfather but is unable to find similarities. The grandfather had collapsed under the lies of the white man that he was the definition of what the world knew as a nigger. James encourages his nephew never to let that word break him and that it really is just a lie. He wants his nephew to know this because he loves his nephew, and his love is something else that he does not want his nephew to forget. James shares with his nephew how he knew his father f or their entire lives. As the older brother, James watched his little brother go through every stage of life. When he looks into his brotherââ¬â¢s face, he sees the faces that he had grown into and then grown out of over the course of his life as though he were a living scrapbook. James even sees memories in his brotherââ¬â¢s faces that he doubts his brother even remembers, like the time when his brother fell down the cellar stairs. James remembers it all, even when his brother does not, because he had been there to witness his brother go through life. More than anything, James knows ââ¬Å"what the world has done to my brother and how narrowly he has survived it.â⬠He acknowledges that his fellow men are in the habit of destroying lives and will continue to do so in a domino effect of human nature. James reminds his nephew that most of mankind is guilty for their own acts of destruction, but that does not mean that all of mankind shares in this guilt. The letter continue s with James pointing out that his nephew was born into a world that was not much different from the world one hundred years ago ââ¬â a world that did not look with favor on people who were not white of skin. James reveals the purpose of the letter, which is to teach his nephew how to handle such a world without losing himself. Part of Jamesââ¬â¢ reassurance is that his nephewââ¬â¢
